CR: BRENNAUER (GER) - bronze in women's road race
GLASGOW - Comments from Lisa BRENNAUER (GER) after winning the bronze medal in the women's cycling road race at the Glasgow 2018 European Championships on Sunday.
Lisa BRENNAUER (GER) - bronze
On her preparation for the race:
"It was not so easy. I was awake for quite a long time last night. I tried to calm down and go to sleep as soon as possible. I had pretty heavy legs this morning but the team believed I could do my job in the race."
On winning a gold and two bronze medals (she also won bronze in the team pursuit) at the Championships:
"It is more than I ever expected. It is really great for me and I am so happy."
On the race tactics:
"We raced without radios so it was real bike racing with not many directions from the car - and you really had to have a good communication as a team. I think that is something we managed really well.
"I could really count on my team. We were present in the front all the time which was our big goal.
"We had Lisa KLEIN (GER) in the big move of the day and it was only when Anna van der BREGGEN (NED) and Elisa LONGO BORGHINI (ITA) attacked that we did not have someone. I did not think we would catch them.
"I also had no time gap, no information so I just had to play a bit of a poker game as I was alone. I saw Holland was not 100 per cent happy with the situation and I had a feeling maybe we can still go for a bronze medal.
"Then we really caught them in the last kilometre and I was able to do the sprint. It was a powerful finish and I am just super happy that we can go home with a bronze medal for the team."
