CT: CONFALONIERI (ITA) - gold
GLASGOW - Comments from Maria Giulia CONFALONIERI (ITA) after winning gold in the women's 25km points race at the 2018 European Track Cycling Championships at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, Emirates Arena on Saturday.
Maria Giulia CONFALONIERI (ITA) - gold
On her tactics to win a medal:
"We had already decided that I had to attack here and there because to beat some of the girls here at the sprint would not have been possible for me. I knew that with a total of 10 sprints I had to gather some points during the 100 laps.
"I tried to do some sprints following some other cyclists because staying in front is physically much too costly for me.
"Having my coach help me with the points calculation is the key for success. We know each other very well and just with an eye contact I can understand what's going on."
On winning gold:
"I've been trying to win this gold for years. In 2011 I won both the junior world and European championships, but after that year I've just collected a lot of podiums. I'm so happy now.
"I defeated someone like Kirsten WILD [NED] who basically won all the competitions we did. We were often together on the podium, but she was always one or two steps higher than me.
"But here not only the legs count, but also the mind and tactics."
On being part of a successful Italian national team:
"We proved we've grown a lot and we keep on improving. Our group is really young. I am one of the oldest but I still am only 25."
