Nina DERWAEL (BEL) - gold in uneven bars; silver in balance beam
On retaining the uneven bars title she won at the 2017 European Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Cluj-Napoca, Romania:
"I knew it was more difficult this time around. I had already won a title, whereas last year I came in without any expectations. This time it was way more difficult to make sure to retain the title."
On having to change focus to the balance beam final after winning gold on uneven bars:
"It was really difficult. People even asked me why I didn't really smile when I was on the medal podium for bars. I was happy, but I still knew I had to do a balance beam final.
"After getting my medal [for uneven bars], I went straight into the beam final. That was hard, but I am very happy after all. Winning two European medals is just great."
On winning the silver medal on balance beam:
"It is really incredible as I wasn't expecting it at all. I just wanted to do my best. I knew after doing my routine that it went pretty well. I was hoping for a great score and there it was. I am really happy.
"It was my first European beam final, I am very happy to take silver. My main focus was on the uneven bars, but then I got into the beam final. I just wanted to give a good performance and it's great how it has turned out."
