SW: PALTRINIERI (ITA) - bronze in the men's 1500m freestyle
GLASGOW - Comments from defending champion Gregorio PALTRINIERI (ITA) after he came third in the 1500m freestyle at Tollcross International Swimming Centre on Sunday.
Gregorio PALTRINIERI (ITA) - bronze
On how he felt during the race:
"Yesterday and today I haven’t been feeling well. I had the flu until two hours ago. Two hours before coming to the pool I had a high temperature. I don’t think I’m very well, I tried to do what I could. I actually thought of not competing. I was undecided until the end.
"I know it was a risk. I didn't know how I would feel in the water. Maybe I should have preserved myself for the 800m, but 99.9 per cent of me thought I should do it.
"I have no regrets. It’s annoying that it happened now but I wanted to do it [the race].
"I tried not to think in these hours, to forget that I wasn’t feeling well, and I started strong to stay up front, but in the end I didn’t have anything left.
"It’s really disappointing, I hope this flu goes away."
On his opponents in the race:
"They swum very well, so maybe I would have lost anyway. I’m sure there would have been other occasions.
"I wouldn’t say that third place in the European championships is bad but I’m very happy."
