Swimmers competing at the European Championships will need nerves of steel if they find themselves up against Hungary’s Iron Lady.
Katinka Hosszu is a three time Olympic champion and has won an incredible 13 Gold medals at European level (long-course). Not bad for an athlete who is yet to reach the age of 30!
Hosszu specialises in individual medley events and was the most successful swimmer in individual events at the Rio 2016 Olympics – where she clinched 3 gold medals and a silver in the 200m backstroke.
Until the age of 13, Hosszu was coached by her grandfather László Bakoe before breaking into the big time.
Her performances at the London Olympics in 2012 fell short of expectations – but the Iron Lady powered on and was soon back amongst the top dogs of European and World swimming.
Two World Championship titles in 2013 and a storming performance at the 2014 Europeans in Berlin reaffirmed her status. It is comebacks such as this that have led to the nickname ‘Iron Lady’.
She’ll have the nation of Hungary behind her at Glasgow 2018, but an athlete of Hosszu’s status will also prove popular with the Scottish crowds!
Make sure you’re there to see the likes of Hosszu compete at the European Aquatics Championships at Tollcross International Swimming pool this summer – http://bit.ly/2A2xAkl
