'The Lord of the Rings' - Eleftherios Petrounias
The ‘Lord of the Rings’ could be returning to Glasgow this summer, and we are not talking about feature length films! There is a man from Greece who has such a mastery over two rings that he has earned himself the coveted title, his name is Eleftherios Petrounias.
The Olympic, World and European Champion has been unstoppable on the still rings over the past four years, and we hope to see him in Glasgow this summer to defend his European title that he won last year in Romania.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Greek star:
DOB – 30/11/1990 (age 27)
HOME CITY – Nea Smyrni
Petrounias rose to fame when he won Olympic gold in Rio 2016 where he upstaged Brazil’s Arthur Zenetti to take the world-famous nickname.
His gold medal made him just the third Greek gymnast in Olympic history to win the still rings title, the first was over one hundred years ago at the 1896 Olympics in Athens.
The second came again in Athens through Dimosthenis Tampakos in 2004.
Prior to the Olympics, Petrounias won two golds and a bronze in the European Championships and a gold in the 2015 World Championships.
He has since defended his European and World titles, cementing his spot at the top of the chain in the still rings event and claiming the label of the ‘Lord of the Rings.’
Biggest World success – Gold at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics.
Biggest European success – Gold at the 2015, 2016 and 2017 European Championships.
Highest gold winning score – 16.000 at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Interesting fact – Petrounias also practices parkour!
