HOSTS HOPE FOR DOUBLE GOLD

With one German in each gold medal match, the last day of table tennis at the European Championships Munich 2022 is set to be a party at the sold-out Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle.

"The atmosphere here is amazing,” said Nina Mittelham (GER), who faces Sofia Polcanova (AUT) in the women’s singles final.

"There are so many spectators and they are all for the Germans. It’s really, really nice and it’s a lot of fun to play in the hall.”

In the men’s singles gold medal match Dang Qiu (GER) will play Darko Jorgić (SLO). The 25-year-old German, who eliminated eight-time European champion Timo Boll (GER) and doubles gold medallist Mattias Falck (SWE) on his way to the final, hopes to give the crowds at Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle more to cheer for on Sunday.

”It’s a pity that no other German is in the final. I think that an all-German final in Munich would be amazing. But this is how it is, I must take it as it is and what I can be certain of is that I will have the crowd and the public on my side,” he said.

FIVE-PEAT OR MAIDEN WINNERS?

David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig (SWE) will be aiming to take two more huge steps in their young careers when they return to the Königsplatz beach volleyball centre court on Sunday for their first CEV EuroBeachVolley semifinal.

The Swedish pair, both 20, will need to find new levels of excellence as they take on four-time champions Anders Mol and Christian Sørum (NOR) in the second semifinal.

In the first semifinal Czech duo Ondřej Perušič and David Schweiner are pitted against Poland’s Michał Bryl and Bartosz Łosiak, with both teams chasing a maiden CEV EuroBeachVolley gold medal match appearance.

MAHUCHIKH AIMING HIGH FOR UKRAINE

Few athletes at the European Championships Munich 2022 will have more motivation to succeed than Yaroslava Mahuchikh (UKR) when she competes for gold in the women’s high jump final at Olympiastadion on Sunday, one of seven finals on the last evening of athletics.

Given the conflict raging in her home country since February, the achievements of the young Ukrainian this year have already been remarkable.

With a best of 2.03m this year, she starts as favourite and the leading European jumper this season, a status denoted by her blue bib.

“I am wearing this blue bib so I should prove it in the final,” she said after qualifying on Friday. “I am in good shape now so I believe that the results will be fine.”

ORANGE HABIT OF WINNING

The women’s road race at the European championships is an orange affair by tradition. The Netherlands won five out of six since the inaugural race in Glasgow in 2016. Italian Marta Bastianelli (2018) was the only exception.

The relatively flat 129.8km course seems to favour sprinters, in which case Lorena Wiebes looks like the main favourite to continue the Orange tradition.

After a 103.8km run-up with the start in Landsberg am Lech, past Lake Ammersee and Lake Starnberg to Wolfratshausen, the riders face two laps on the same technically challenging 13km circuit in the city streets of Munich, finishing at Odeonsplatz.
