By The Numbers: Some Key Munich 2022 Figures

After eleven days of the European Championships Munich 2022 with emotional and magical moments and overwhelming images, we have gotten to the core of it all and crunched some numbers. Because Munich 2022 cannot only be described with feelings and emotions, but also with hard facts and figures.

SPORTING STATISTICS

They were the stars of the show: 4,024 athletes competed in Munich. They represented 50 nations from all over Europe, plus two special teams. In athletics, two runners - Jamal Abdelmaji Eisa Mohammed and Tachlowini Gabriyesos - competed for the Athlete Refugee Team. In triathlon, Jeanne Lehair represented Team World Triathlon on a country-neutral basis. In the future, the French-born athlete will compete for Luxembourg - a mere formality, but one that was not yet completed for the European Championships.

The 4,024 athletes competed in nine Olympic sports, which could hardly be more different, and yet all had one big goal in mind, a European championship title. In the end, 176 sets of medals were awarded. In both rowing and paracanoe one of the originally planned finals did not take place.

FESTIVITIES AND FESTIVAL FEELINGS

The sporting achievements and the free festival The Roofs did not only attract the people of Munich, but guests from all over Germany, Europe and the world who got to enjoy the unique atmosphere in Olympiapark and at the other venues. The organisers' goal was already achieved before the end of the event: And in total, they were honoured and pleased to welcome 1.47 million visitors

They cheered and inspired the athletes to top performances. However, there was not only sport to watch, but also to participate in: The Munich 2022 Sports Badge invited both young and old to take part in their very own mini-European Championships and try out the nine sports. Exactly 4,000 sports badges were successfully completed – congratulations to all!

The sports badge was just one of many offers in the free and colourful supporting programme. The Roofs accompanied Munich 2022 with culture, music, art, food and drinks and much more. Eleven Roofs presented themselves as individual theme worlds - from the Technology Roof for technology enthusiasts to the Heimat Roof for Bavarian flair and the Kids Roofs for the youngest of our guests. With 772 programme items and more than 150 different artists the hardest part was knowing you were spoilt for choice. Either way, the choice was always the right one, as the beaming faces and bright eyes testified.

HELPING HANDS

Hard-working sets of hands were at work behind the scenes to manage this gigantic project. Over 6,000 volunteers were assigned, and each and every one of them deserves a huge thank you. They prepared the fields of play, conducted interviews in the mixed zone, greeted the guests with a smile or welcomed the teams in the hotels. The tasks were manifold.

The Local Organising Committee also received support from service providers and freelancers - a total of 1,595 staff members were on site.

A total of 29,422 accreditations were issued, from the teams and volunteers to the representatives of media and TV, who reported live from Munich and the surrounding area.
