Table tennis president hails ‘special moment’ of multi-sport Championships debut

Table tennis chief Pedro Moura has celebrated the “special moment” that saw his sport make its debut at the multi-sport European Championships Munich 2022 on Day 3.

The ETTU acting president was on hand with his deputy, Heike Ahlert, as play got under way at the Rudi-Sedlmeyer-Halle starting with the preliminary round of matches in the doubles events.

“This is a very special moment,” he told the athletes at the opening of the competition.

“For the first time table tennis is a part of this big organisation. We are proud to be here, in this city and venue full of history, in a country full of table tennis history.

“The Local Organising Committee (LOC) has put a great effort and the result is a venue and event prepared to the highest standards.”

Table tennis is one of four new sports making their debut at the Munich Championships, along with five who first appeared at Glasgow and Berlin in 2018.

Then tournament runs right up until the final day of the Championships on August 21st.

“Over the next nine days we are going to see top European players fighting for the medals and good matches are guaranteed,” Moura added.

“From the look of the players’ and coaches’ faces I could see the LOC did a great job to give them perfect conditions, now I wish they fulfil their dreams and targets.”
