"The Roofs" festival boasts a star-studded line-up: Beatsteaks, Ry X and Gayle headline European Championships Munich 2022

For music lovers, creative minds, and art fans. To join in, dance along and enjoy music - from young to old. Full of character and charm. "The Roofs" festival accompanies the European Championships Munich 2022 for 11 days with a colourful programme completely free of charge. Headline acts such as Ry X, Gayle and the Beatsteaks meet art, culture, and cuisine.

From 11–21 August, the European Championships Munich 2022 will combine sport and culture as the Bavarian capital last experienced at the 1972 Olympic Games. The festival “The Roofs” will accompany the biggest multi-sport event in 50 years with a diverse and free supporting programme. The unique combination of sport, music and culture is THE event of the summer.

More village character than gigantism

The festival “The Roofs” consists of 11 individual self-sufficient worlds of experience with their own thematic focuses, called “Roofs”: The Central Roof, for example, celebrates culture, music, and golden sporting moments. The Central Stage in Olympiasee is the festival’s largest stage. The Creative Roof offers space for development and chance meetings. The colourful programme invites you to dream and takes visitors on musical journeys. Olympiaberg is the place to be. Whether at the Weisswurst breakfast or at the cabaret in the evening - the Heimat Roof ensures Bavarian cosiness. The Art Roof presents itself as an extraordinary platform for art, with the floating container studios on Olympiasee a feast for the eyes. Colourful pennants, fairy lights and cool drinks - at the Capri Roof on Olympiasee, a holiday atmosphere is guaranteed. You can touch and explore innovation and research at the Technology Roof. From creative workshops, the chain carousel to fun and sporty participatory programmes, the Kids Roof will make the hearts of the youngest festival visitors beat faster and give parents time to catch their breath. Detailed information on all the “Roofs” can be found at munich2022.com/en/festival.

All nine sports at your fingertips

With the nine European Championships in athletics, beach volleyball, canoe sprint, cycling, gymnastics, rowing, sport climbing, table tennis and triathlon, European Championships Munich 2022 will offer top-class sport to watch. Through “The Roofs,” the sports become experienceable. Visitors can try out all nine sports and put their skills to the test with the Munich2022 sports badge. But it is not only Olympiapark that creates unforgettable moments. The Multicolour Roof at Königsplatz and the Golden Beach Roof at Olympic Regatta Centre live up to their names.

Individual “Roofs” create a unique synergy that focuses on the special and unexpected. Top national and international headline acts create a holistic festival flair. The result is a light and easy-going atmosphere, which for a moment cancels out the heaviness of everyday life and current world events.

Punk, pop and Neue Deutsche Welle

Not much needs to be said about Beatsteaks. The punk-rock old-timers from Berlin are too notorious. Wondering what a meteoric start to your career looks like? Look no further than LUNA. From a Lower Bavarian village near Passau, she is now at home on the biggest stages in Germany - with a gold record and 1LIVE Krone to her name. After going viral on TikTok, GAYLE is another prime example of overnight success, enjoying a global number one hit from the US to Malaysia with abcdefu. In Germany, the 17-year-old Texan saluted from the top of the charts for a total of eight weeks. A path that will lead her to the Central Stage on 18 August. With RY X, another exceptional international artist will be showcasing his talents at the Creative Roof. The Australian enchants with intimate, timeless, and atmospheric songs and melodies that don’t let go.

To enjoy and sing along

Several well-known bands have emerged from Cologne and the latest discovery is Bukahara. The four lads play a unique mix of folk, swing, and Arabic-Balkan sound. Meute are also young, bold, and refreshingly different. The 11-piece techno-marching band from Hamburg reinterpret the works of well-known DJs and accompany them with their brass instruments. We go electronic with ÄTNA. The Dresden duo is one of the newcomers on the German electronica scene. But not only shooting stars will showcase their talents at Olympiapark, but bands entrenched in music history. Next year, Alphaville will celebrate their 40th birthday. The legendary synthpop band can look back on global hits like “Big in Japan” and “Forever Young.” Nostalgia in Olympiapark - that makes sense. One band must not be missing in the Bavarian capital: Münchener Freiheit. When the local heroes play, thousands of fans with sure lyrics guarantee a great atmosphere. But the Bavarian dialect is given even more of a stage, in the truest sense of the word. Oimara, alias der Stenz von der Alm, will create a great atmosphere at the Heimat Roof and could serve up the festival hit with “Bierle in da Sun.”

Classical music and choirs

“The Roofs” is a festival for everyone - also for all musical tastes. For classical music fans, Stadtsparkasse München presents the Munich Symphony Orchestra. Open air classical music simply has a special flair as we know from “Klassik am Odeonsplatz.” The Regensburger Domspatzen - accompanied by the Police Orchestra - will also make a guest appearance in Munich with three choirs. There is something for everyone with this colourful and varied programme. Whether dancing, singing along or simply admiring, whether young or old, big, or small – Olympiapark and the whole city of Munich will be THE place to be in August.

The following table provides an overview of the current line-up for the festival “The Roofs”:
