Ticket sales launched for European Championships Munich 2022 – spectacular medal decisions each day

In a summer without a Football World Cup or the Olympics, there is a special major European sporting event to look forward to next year – the multi-sport European Championships Munich 2022. From 11-21 August 2022 the best European athletes from athletics, beach volleyball, canoe sprint, cycling, gymnastics, rowing, sport climbing, table tennis, and triathlon will converge on Munich for 11 stirring days of action that will see medals handed out across 176 events. Advance ticket sales for the largest multisport event in Germany in 50 years will start on October 26th. In addition to the wide range of sporting activities on offer, visitors can also look forward to The Roofs – the festival of diversity and surprises.

Nine months out from the start of action, the anticipation is growing for what will be Munich’s biggest sporting event since the 1972 Summer Olympics with approximately 4,700 athletes expected to compete with medals on offer every day. Following its inaugural event in 2018, the European Championships programme has been revamped and extended to include four new sports and also para competitions in canoe sprint and rowing, bringing even greater diversity to an already varied sports programme.

Advance ticket sales begin on Tuesday 26 October 2021

The organisers are expecting one million visitors inside the venues, on the routes and at the festival The Roofs. Ticket prices begin at 10 Euros with several fan-friendly offerings with day tickets and championship tickets available for individual sports. There will also be combined tickets on offer for some events, such as the decathlon. The tickets are available at www.munich2022.com/tickets. In addition to discounted tickets, the organisers are paying great attention to providing free inclusive services such as audio description, sign language interpreters and portable induction loop hearing systems for all medal events. In cooperation with ClimatePartner, the organisers have calculated the spectators’ average CO2 footprint and will give ticket buyers the opportunity to offset this with a voluntary contribution to climate protection.

A number of events, such as marathon and race walking in athletics, BMX freestyle, mountain bike cross-country, road cycling and triathlon will be accessible free of charge. This is further extended to selected sessions in beach volleyball and sport climbing, as well as to the festival The Roofs.

The Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of the Interior, Building and Community, Stephan Mayer: ‘‘With just under ten months to go until the start of the European Championships Munich 2022, the anticipation is rising. With the start of ticket sales, the preparations for Munich 2022 are heating up. In addition to numerous gripping sporting competitions, visitors can also look forward to the festival "The Roofs", where they can experience the unique spirit of the event even if they do not attend the competitions.‘‘

Joachim Herrmann, Bavaria's State Minister of the Interior, Sports and Integration: “This multi-sport event with nine European Championships will generate positive and sustainable effects well beyond its sporting context. Munich, Bavaria, and indeed all of Germany will benefit significantly and in the long term. From 11-21 August 2022, the world will look to Bavaria and its state capital Munich for eleven days; a fantastic opportunity to witness top international athletes in exciting competitions right at our own doorstep.”

Munich's Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter: ‘’The 50th anniversary of the Summer Olympic Games in Munich is just around the corner. What better way to celebrate the anniversary than with a sporting event like the European Championships. With the start of advance ticket sales, Munich 2022 is now a decisive step closer. Every sports enthusiast can secure tickets and look forward to exciting competitions at various sports venues in the city. The many free offers round off the programme of the European Championships Munich 2022 perfectly and underline the inclusive and sustainable character of the event. The anticipation in our city is rising!”

“The European Championships Munich 2022 shall not only be a first-class international multisport event. We want to set new standards, especially when it comes to inclusion and sustainability. The offer of freely accessible competitions is one of them. At the same time, I am convinced that ticketing, with its many different offers, enables a wide range of visitors to experience the unique atmosphere of this extraordinary sporting event,” stated Marion Schöne, Organiser and Managing Director of Olympiapark München GmbH.

European Championship Munich 2022 take the stage

During a press conference on 26 October at the heart of the event in Olympiapark München, the European Championships Munich 2022 were presented to the public by host Marion Schöne.

The three funding bodies to the event – The Federal Republic of Germany, the Free State of Bavaria and the City of Munich – were represented by the Bavarian State Minister of the Interior, for Sport and Integration Joachim Hermann, and Munich’s sports mayor Verena Dietl. The politicians stressed the importance of the event for not only Munich and Bavaria, but for Germany as a whole, and how it aligns with the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community (BMI) and German Olympic Sports Confederation’s (DOSB) national strategy for major sporting events.

Also on hand were elite German athletes: Olympic and European javelin champion Thomas Röhler, German multi-winning gymnastics champion Sarah Voss and local hero Oliver Zeidler – reigning world and European single sculls rowing champion. The three athletes enthusiastically explained the advantages of the multi-sport event, as well as offering unique perspectives into their careers.
