With Munich 2022, the second edition of the European Championships, just three months away, we asked Ron Chakraborty, Executive Editor, Major Events at BBC Sport, to look back on the challenges and rewards of broadcasting the inaugural multi-sports event in Glasgow and Berlin in 2018.

Nine top-class European sports and an extraordinary festival – the Bavarian capital will shine in the splendour of the European Championships Munich 2022 from 11-21 August 2022. With the second edition of the multi-sport European Championships in Munich taking place 11-21 August and European Championships Management developing the host city appointment process for the third edition in 2026, the future looks bright for the innovative event that aims to ‘Elevate the Champions of Europe’. The inaugural European Championships in 2018 were a voyage of discovery for organisers. Paul Bush OBE, Director of Events, VisitScotland, explains why Glasgow and Scotland wanted the event, and what they gained from hosting it.

ECM Co-Founder and Co-Managing Director Paul Bristow was invited to speak on sporting event impacts at the Host City 2021 Conference in December. Bristow took part in a workshop on ‘Defining event impacts and promoting positive outcomes.’ It followed ECM’s key contribution to a report by the ASOIF, which, for the first time, establishes a set of common indicators for event stakeholders to cost-effectively assess the value of sporting events.

Europe’s leading free-to-air broadcasters met in Munich earlier this week at the World Broadcaster Meeting for the European Championships 2022 to learn more about ongoing preparations for the second edition of the multi-sport event.

Road Cycling routes for European Championships Munich 2022 have been announced. The women's race starts in Landsberg, the men's in Murnau. Both races will connect the two tourist attractions, city centre and surroundings, leading through the foothills of the Alps to the finish line at Odeonsplatz. The time trial events will be held in Fürstenfeldbruck.

Around 14,500 events have taken place in the Munich Olympic Park since 1972. This makes Munich's landmark an event location and meeting point with a glorious past, a vibrant present and a bright future. From 11-21 August 2022, the park will once again be in the spotlight: By hosting the European Championships Munich 2022, Munich will welcome the biggest sporting event since the 1972 Summer Olympics.
